Pierpont Marketing, in Houston, TX., was updating it’s approach to their own public image, and had come up with a campaign that – no surprise – involved a branding iron of their corporate logo. They are, after all, in Texas.

They’d designed the iron and sent the design off to the top branding iron specialist in the Lone Star State. Only problem was, the smith was too backed up and had to tell Pierpont that he couldn’t make their deadline. The series of kick-off events was already tightly planned and now they faced the prospect of opening with no branding iron and about a week to go!
I had been asked to photograph the finished branding iron, and was at their headquarters in Houston to discuss their needs when I was told photos might not happen. Upon learning this I asked if they’d allow me to try to help. I called a master blacksmith I had hired to do a much smaller job of my own in Pennsylvania. After explaining the issue and sending off the drawings for him to review, I asked if he could get it made and delivered in the time remaining. He could (at a premium, of course) and he did. I went back to PA and to his shop and picked it up. Then to my brother’s farm nearby, where he stoked up a wood fire in a cast iron stove in his machine shop and I made a whole series of photographs, including this one, which was delivered via the net. This photo became the premier image for their branding revision. Meanwhile the branding-iron itself was packed up and shipped FedEx overnight to Pierpont, where it arrived in time to be mounted on their display for the grand unveiling.
