This is one of a lovely series of staff portraits we did for Service Coordination/Montcordia. In pre-production scouting I learned there would be two different types of photographs for each of 6-8 people. The first was a standard business headshot against a light gray background. Those would take place in the lobby in a setup including 3 lights and the background. However, the greater challenge was the request for a more office-like second set.
By scouting I found there was a small conference room just off the lobby. The conference table and chairs took up nearly all the space, so the equipment setup would have to be minimal; far smaller than what we were doing in the lobby. It was the perfect place for one of my very favorite lighting modifiers – the lantern ball, or what we often call the pumpkin ball. With this one 38″ spherical modifier we could illuminate the entire room.
Subject distance from the light and its power setting controls the lighting differential between the subject and the room. Shutter speed, aperture and ISO allows me to control the effect of the large windows behind the set. By moving myself and the camera to a couple of pre determined spots, I changed the background as well as whether the subject was receiving broad or short lighting. Boom! Homerun!!!
